"THE EMBARKMENT FOR CYTHERA is one of the great masterpieces of Jean-Antoine Watteau, who gained fame as the painter of fêtes galantes (scenes of gallantry). In this painting he infuses that particular atmosphere characteristic of the aristocratic life of the ancient régime, which Talleyrand called the "sweetness of living." Light, transparent colors are spread with a rapid, luminous brushstroke that unites all the elements of the story in a fluid composition."
